YOU TO CAN BE A GOURMET COOK

Are you a foodie? Do you enjoy cooking? Do you like to experiment and try new styles of cuisine? If you have answered yes to any of these questions then you can’t go past having a fun day at the Mexx Cooking School in Bali.

Get away from the noise and bustle in busy parts of Bali and enjoy the quiet and beautiful countryside of Yeh Gangga in Tabanan. This remote location is perfect to chill out and see the real Bali. Whether an adult or a child 10+ you can enjoy this full day outing.

Chef Markus has specifically designed his cooking school with customized individual cooking stations so you are very hands on throughout the cooking lesson. An experienced and qualified executive chef, he and his Indonesian wife Erlinda make you feel at home and share their love of food and passion about their cooking school with you. This place is special and unlike any other cooking school on the island of Bali.

The day commences with a large group pick up from hotels and villas around the Kuta, Legian, Seminyak, Canggu and Tanah Lot areas and don’t worry if only a single or couple, small group pickups also happen at Seminyak or Canggu.

Once in his comfortable car, Markus takes us to our first stop a ‘Pasar’ or market. It is here that the local ingredients are sourced to make many of the dishes. Markus explains what each fruit, spice or vegetable is and we get to see how fresh coconut is ground to make desiccated fresh coconut. The taste is so different from the dried coconut we buy in supermarkets.

After shopping and getting what is required we sit back and head off to Tabanan.  On arrival we are greeted by staff that offer us a great tasting Papaya juice and we enjoy some local, sweet delicacies for morning tea before hitting the garden and seeing what fruit trees, vegetable and spices are grown on the property

A quick hand wash and we're off downstairs where we are introduced to a range of spices

A cookbook is presented to each of us that we can take away and we discover what we are going to make, 7 different dishes, then later enjoy them for a late lunch.  Each dish that is made has ground spices and we learn that the pestle and mortar we are using takes special skill. The hand wrist movement is different from the pounding that most of us are used to.  Staff kindly come and assist and get this done quickly making hard ingredients into a paste that forms the foundation of all the dishes.

Time disappears quickly and before we know it we have created some amazing smelling dishes and our taste buds are salivating. We site down to lunch and enjoy my favorite, a great appetizer with beans, chicken and fresh coconut, a fish soup, a pork dish, a beef rending, chicken satay, yellow rice, and a vegetable noodle dish. Finally ending the meal with sticky rice in coconut cream.

For a fun day out don’t go past booking at the Mexx Cooking School, a provider on the Bali Tourist Card
